WELCOME TO VFW POST 7731

The Little Finger Post
As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.  Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, the war on terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.

VFW Little Finger Post 7731 in the heart of Leelanau County was first formed in 1946 by several Leelanau Veterans of World War II.  They started with the building in it's current location, first with the basement and then 7 years later the main floor.  The entire building was built through the efforts and volunteer time of the members and others from the community.

IN-COUNTRY

A satirical reflection by Author/Artist Phil Fehrenbacher

Phil enlisted in the Army in 1965 where you served for years in Vietnam.  He became a graphic designer and has worked for the state of Oregon for 26 years.  He retired in 2003 and started the Cartoon "In-Country".  The cartoons reflect his experiences during his tour of duty in South Vietnam.

Commander's Corner

Commander Greg Mikowski

As we enter into springtime, let us remember that Northern Michigan’s weather can be deceiving. Enjoy the warmer days when we have them and always be prepared for the cold and possible storms that come this time of year. If any of our Veterans need help with things around their homes, please reach out to us, we will help in whatever way can.

May brings several events for us in the VFW. Starting with May 1st, Loyalty Day.

Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists' May 1 celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York's Union Square to promote patriotism. Through a resolution adopted in 1949, May 1 evolved into Loyalty Day. Observances began in 1950 on April 28 and climaxed May 1 when more than five million people across the nation held rallies. In New York City, more than 100,000 people rallied for America. In 1958 Congress enacted Public Law 529 proclaiming Loyalty Day a permanent fixture on the nation's calendar.

Next, we will be hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony on May 9thstarting at 9am. If you have, or know of someone that has an old worn American Flag, bring them to the ceremony so they can be properly retired. If you are unable to make it to the ceremony, you can drop off you old American Flag in our drop box, located on the East side of the Post.

Last and most important, Memorial Day. Monday May 25 we will host our annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony. We are hoping the weather cooperates and we can have it at the Leelanau County Veterans Memorial. The ceremony will start at 11am and go for approximately an hour.

We sincerely hope everyone had a great Winter and has wonderful and safe Springtime.
